KOCHI: If you go by the number of people arrested over the last eight weeks in Ernakulam district, the majority of those who break the law are in the 20-49 age group. A total of 963 persons were arrested in the 30 to 39 age group and 918 in the 20 to 29 age group between April 20 and June 14, according to data on the police website. During this period, nearly 114 teenagers in the 18-19 age group were arrested by the police.

A total of 3,635 culprits were arrested in all categories from the district over the last eight weeks.
While those in the 30-39 age bracket were arrested mainly for theft, criminal trespass and rash driving, those in the 20-29 age group were arrested mainly for causing hurt and rash driving.
Explaining the reason why increasing number of youth were having problems with law, Central Institute of Behavioural Sciences director K S David said, "This is the age group when one takes up family responsibilities. When they find it difficult to get a well-paying job, they may indulge in criminal activities to meet their financial needs."
"It's the active age group and chances of getting involved in criminal activities are high during this period," said Ernakulam district rural police chief Satheesh Bino.
M R Ajith Kumar, inspector general of police, Ernakulam range, also underlined the fact and said that people in the 20-49 age bracket were more likely to engage in criminal activities as it was the most active period in human life.
Police had arrested 3,635 persons from the district in the last eight weeks. Of these, almost 26% fall in the age group of 30 to 39. This was followed by 941 persons in the age group of 40 to 49, 918 in the 20 to 29 age group, 387 persons in 50 to 59 age group and 115 in 60 to 69 age group. Police also arrested 12 persons in the age group of 70 to 79 years in various cases over the last eight weeks.
According to police, persons in the 18-19 age group were arrested mainly under the Motor Vehicles Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
